About the University

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), a historically black land grant university, aspires to become a model institution for teaching and research that nurtures and launches leaders, particularly from among minority communities.  UMES is a comparatively small, but growing, and primarily residential university, with a teaching and research mission consistent with its legacy as an 1890 Land Grant Institution.  The University emphasizes its commitment to equal educational opportunity and strives to provide education, research, and public service programs to both the region and state.
UMES offers selected baccalaureate programs in the Liberal Arts and Sciences and in careers with particular relevance to the
Eastern Shore, in addition to offering programs at the masters and doctoral levels.  As a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland (USM), UMES practices affirmative action; cooperates with other educational segments in Maryland; collaborates with other USM institutions to provide citizens access to high quality educational services, while serving the educational, economic, and cultural needs of Maryland. Mission

The mission of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, in an environment which promotes maximum development of individual potential and societal enrichment, offers programs of instruction, research and public service.  Through its program development, emphasis will be given to land-grant functions as defined by the Morrill Acts of 1862 and 1890; maintenance of a historical legacy which emphasizes a commitment to promote equal education opportunity; and programs which have particular relevance to the Eastern Shore region including environmental sciences, technology, hospitality services and human resource development.
