University Housing and Residence Life

Dormitory Facilities and Services - Ext. 6146

In order for a currently enrolled student to live on campus, a completed Application for Residence Hall Accommodations must be filed with the Office of Residence Life (ORL).  Students wishing to reserve housing are required to submit a deposit, which is applied toward a student’s room charge.  Applications for on-campus housing must be submitted for each semester.  Room deposits are refundable if notification is provided to the ORL in writing by August 1 for the fall semester and by January 1 for the spring semester.  Failure to notify the ORL prior to this date results in the forfeiture of the deposit.

All residence facilities have policies that incorporate quiet hours for study and rest, as well as hours when non-disruptive group activities may take place.  When students move into residence halls, they are required to sign the ORL Residence Hall Agreement.  This agreement basically states that as residents are responsible for their room and the furnishings provided by ORL, and that he/she will abide by the code of conduct and policies set forth by ORL.  Failure to follow these terms can result in fines, university judicial action, or eviction from residence halls. A complete copy of the Residence Hall Agreement is available from the ORL.

Room Accommodations

Rooms in each residence hall are equipped with basic furnishings: beds, dressers, desks, chairs, closets, wastepaper cans and a telephone.  Cable television hookup is available in every room at no extra cost.  Telephone service connects students to all campus extensions at no cost.  Long-distance service (including international dialing) is available from residence hall room phones if the student has made an appropriate deposit to the Hawk Express Phone System (HEPS).

Residence Hall visitation policy varies according to class status, residence hall, day of the week and time.  Freshmen student may only have room visitors on weekends during specified hours; weekday visitation is allowed in common areas in each hall.  Freshman students residing in apartment housing units are not allowed to have room visitations by members of the opposite sex.  For upperclassmen (sophomores, juniors and seniors) room visitations are allowed everyday from noon to midnight, with extended hours on weekends.  Overnight guests of the same sex are permitted in all halls.  Guests must be registered with the residence hall management office.  For more information on housing options, consult the Office of Residence Life or the university catalog.

Each housing location has a resource center equipped with academic support amenities.  Word processors, typewriters, video equipment, calculators, reference materials, group study areas and meeting rooms are available free to all students.

Modern card operated laundry facilities are available throughout the residential areas.  The Hawk Express Card must be used at Hawkmats facilities located in each housing location.  Coins are not accepted in the machines.

End of Semester Check-out

Students must move out of residence halls at the end of each semester.  All personal belongings must be removed prior to officially vacating the premises.  The University does not storage facilities for personal belongings on campus; however, there are many local storage companies that offer reasonable rates for short and long term-storage.

Area Directors and Counselors

Residence halls are staffed by “live-in” professionals or directors who are responsible for ensuring proper management of the facilities, counseling students, and enforcing policies of the ORL.

Chat Newsletter

Students are kept informed of upcoming resident activities, programs, and events through The Chat Newsletter, published quarterly.  Newsletter articles are written by ORL staff, residents and numerous guest writers.

Vending Services

Residence halls offer food, drink, and game vending services for student use.  Vending services are located in each housing location and throughout the campus as well.

Dining Services

UMES students may elect to dine-in and/or carry-out from among three facilities located on campus.  All students living in residence halls (except those in efficiency units) must purchase a meal plan with the campus dining services.  Students living off campus may also purchase a meal plan.

The Pan-Hellenic Council

Made up of representatives of the National Greek Letter Organizations at UMES.  The council makes recommendations to the administrative bodies of the UMES campus regarding the activities of the National Greek Letter Organizations on the campus.  One of its chief functions is to stimulate and guide each individual Greek Letter Organization so that the best interest of the university community is served.
Any sorority or fraternity that engages in an activity, incidental to the pledging process, that causes harm to the student will be suspended.  For a current listing of active Greek organizations on campus, consult the Student Government Association.
