Department Of Human Ecology

Scholarships

The following scholarships are available through the Department of Human Ecology. Departmental scholarships are awarded annually. Applications are reviewed in the Spring semester. Students interested in applying for a scholarship should request an application from the Human Ecology office. All application packets must be submitted to the department office by the first Monday in March.

Human Ecology Alumni Scholarship

This scholarship is supported by Human Ecology Alumni and is available to students at the sophomore level or higher.  The minimum qualification is a 3.0 grade point average for the academic year prior to the award.  Other factors considered include participation in extra-curricular, civic, and community activities.

Aletheia Elps Scholarship

Members of the Delta Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. established this scholarship in memory of former Human Ecology faculty member, Aletheia Elps. Candidates must be incoming freshman fashion merchandising majors with a 3.0 GPA.  A first semester average of 3.0 or better must be achieved in order to receive the second semester installment, or book scholarship.

Retia Scott Walker Scholarship

Established in honor of Dr. Retia Scott Walker, former Chair of the Department of Human Ecology, in recognition of her dedication to students and commitment to academic excellence.  Each year the department awards one scholarship ranging from $250-$500 to an outstanding student majoring in a Human Ecology discipline.  The criteria include sophomore standing or higher, minimum 3.0 GPA, and active membership in the Human Ecology Club.

The James W. & Anne W. Taylor Endowment Fund

Established to provide need-based scholarships for students enrolled in the Department of Agriculture and Human Ecology at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.  The criteria include a cumulative 2.5 GPA or higher and demonstrated financial need.

The Brenda Eaton Edwards Scholarship Fund

Established to provide annual scholarships to support majors in the Department of Human Ecology at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.  The criteria include a 2.5 GPA and must be a member in good standing of the Maryland and American Home Economics Associates

The Holden Scholarship Fund

Established to support annual scholarships to minority Business and Human Ecology students from the Easter Shore of Virginia who demonstrate outstanding potential for advancement in their field.  The criteria include a 3.0 GPA, must be a resident of the Eastern Shore of Virginia, full-time student, Junior or Senior Business or Human Ecology major, and submit a letter of application.

The Julia Carter Lacy Endowed Scholarship Fund

Established to provide scholarships for one or more majors in the Department of Human Ecology at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.  If no student is selected, the funds go to a student in Agriculture.  The criteria include a 2.5 minimum GPA or higher, must be a resident of Calvert County or Prince Georges County, and a Human Ecology major first and Agriculture major second choice.
